New Delhi: State-run power equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals is set to form a joint venture with UK-based Sheffield (Forgemasters) to manufacture nuclear forgings.
The joint venture is expected to be on a technology transfer basis and Bhel would buy the technology from the foreign firm.
“BHEL will form a joint venture with UK-based firm Sheffield (Forgemasters) to manufacture nuclear forgings,” sources said, but refused to divulge further details about the tie-up.
Bhel is expected to register 30% growth in the next three years on the back of a robust order-book of about Rs45,000 crore.
The company plans to manufacture equipment to generate about 20,000 MW of power by 2011 and is investing Rs10,000 crore in the current 11th Plan on organic expansion. For achieving this target, its production units at Tiruchirapally, Bhopal, Haridwar, Jhansi and Hyderabad are being upgraded.
Bhel has recently bagged orders worth Rs2,100 crore from NTPC and Rs1,175 crore from the Madhya Pradesh government to set up thermal power plants.
It would set up two 500 MW units of steam generator and steam turbine generator packages at NTPC’s Mauda Super Thermal Power Project in Nagpur, Maharashtra and a 500 MW thermal power plant at Bina, Madhya Pradesh. The order (Bina) has been placed by Jaypee Group company Bina Power Company and Bhel would install two units of 250 MW each for the project.
Bhel’s scope of work in both the projects include design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of boilers, turbines and associated auxiliaries.
