Mumbai: At Jet Airways (India) Ltd, India’s second largest airline by passengers carried, it’s time for the return of the natives.

At least seven top executives who left in earlier years have returned to the airline in the past six months, the last being Narayan Hariharan, who joined as senior vice-president a couple of weeks ago.

Other senior executives who have returned include A.S. Bedi (vice-president, security), Hassan Al Mousawi (senior vice-president, safety and quality), Vinod Sarin (vice-president, projects), V. Raja (regional head, South India) Jayaraj Shanmugham (senior vice-president, customer services) and Santhosh Chalke (vice-president, industrial relations).

A Jet Airways spokesperson confirmed the development.

Hariharan was associated with the office of Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal during his previous stint. He left in 2008 to join the Adani Group and later went to pursue a doctorate degree.

The Mumbai-based airline reported a net loss of 1,728.99 crore for the quarter ended 31 March, compared with a net loss of 2,153.57 crore in the year-ago period. The airline announces its quarterly earnings on Friday.

According to K. Sudarshan, managing partner (Asia) with EMA Partners International, an executive search firm, opportunities in the airline industry are limited.

“There are limited options out there for talent. It is not (just) Jet Airways; many organizations, international and local, have the practice of accepting their old talent as it is more comfortable to work with them," Sudarshan said.

Jet Airways has acknowledged the scarcity of talent in the industry, especially in India, a person close to the development said. “Goyal realizes that he had lost more than dozen executives who were with him in his troubled times with experiences of more than two decades. He is trying to correct it," he said, declining to be named.

However, Goyal is also losing the airline’s chief commercial officer Raj Sivakumar. The Jet spokesperson confirmed this development as well.

“Raj Sivakumar has decided to pursue new career opportunities and will be leaving the company in early September," the spokesperson said.

Sivakumar declined to comment.

In 2013, Etihad Airways PJSC picked up a 24% stake in Jet Airways.

Jet Airways reported a fiscal fourth-quarter loss for the three months ended 31 March as it took an impairment charge on an investment in its subsidiary JetLite.
