New Delhi: The country’s flagship automotive show, the 11th Auto Expo, to be held in January next year will be smaller in terms of space from the previous one held in 2010, but it may have the likes of Ferrari and Mini as the main attractions among others.

“Compared to the 2010 Auto Expo, the upcoming one will be smaller in terms of space. This has been done keeping in mind the feedback we received from the last edition when there were criticisms about overcrowding and difficulties faced by visitors," Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) senior director Sugato Sen told PTI.

He said the number of hangars will almost be halved this time to 10 compared to the last edition of the Auto Expo.

“Overall, there will be a reduction of space between 4,000 square metres to 5,000 square metres from what we had in 2010," he said.

In the Auto Expo 2010, the exhibition area was about 1,25,500 square metres and saw a total of 2,105 exhibitors, including 807 overseas participants from 30 countries.

“In terms of participants, this time around the number will be more," he said but did not comment on the specifics.

Sen, however, reiterated that the scaling down of space has nothing to do with the slowdown seen in the Indian automotive market.

While most of the participants have not yet disclosed their launch plans for the Auto Expo 2012, it is understood that the main attractions could be luxury brands like Ferrari and Mini from the BMW group.

Queries to Ferrari India representative and BMW India remained unanswered.

Interestingly, it is understood that Tata Motors and Fiat, which had shared stall in the last edition, wanted to have independent space this time around. However, due to space constraint they have been asked to showcase jointly.

Likewise, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd, which wanted an independent stall in the two-wheeler segment has also been asked to stay together with Maruti Suzuki India in the same hall, where all the Suzuki products will be displayed.

The biennial Auto Expo is organised by SIAM, Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) and industry chamber CII and is dubbed as Asia largest Automotive show.
