New Delhi: State-run power equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) on Thursday posted a net profit of Rs790.56 crore for the quarter ended 31 December 2008, a marginal rise of 2.41% over the same period last year.

BHEL’s net profit for the corresponding period in the year-ago period stood at Rs771.90 crore, a company statement said.

The total turnover of the company jumped 16.71% to Rs6,453.29 crore from Rs5,528.88 crore a year ago.

The Board of Directors of the company have announced an interim dividend of 90%.

The order book of BHEL stands at Rs1,13,500 crore at the end of the third quarter of the current financial year.

Meanwhile, BHEL is supplying disc insulators for high voltage transmission projects.

BHEL has designed, developed and tested these insulators at Sweden, the only internationally accredited laboratory equipped for testing of such insulators in the world.

These insulators would be used in the first-ever 800 KV HVDC Transmission Line of state-run PowerGrid Corporation Ltd from Biswanath Chiryaly in the North East to Agra.

The interconnection is expected to bring surplus low-cost power from the North Eastern India to the power deficit states in the Northern region.
