New Delhi: InterContinental Hotels Group Plc, the owner of the Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza chains, said it is expanding its network in India with contracts to manage six properties in business and leisure destinations.
The hotels will be located in the coastal vacation hotspot of Kerala, the technology and software hub of Pune and capital New Delhi, the Windsor, England-based company said on 5 April. One of the properties will be a Crowne Plaza hotel in southern India.
“Expanding our already significant employee base and operations in India underpins our long term commitment toward the country," Tony South, senior vice-president for development and asset management at the Asia Pacific unit, said.
InterContinental joins Hilton Hotels Corp. and Accor SA, Europe’s largest hotel company, which are building rooms in Asia’s fourth-biggest economy as airlines add flights to new airports and tourism grows at the world’s third-fastest pace after Montenegro and China. InterContinental runs hotels in downtown Delhi and Mumbai, the two biggest business centres.
India’s foreign-exchange earnings from overseas tourists rose 16% in the first two months of this year to $1.42 billion (Rs6,127 crore) from $1.23 billion a year earlier, the ministry of tourism said 8 March. Overseas tourist arrivals rose 15% to 977,031 in the period.
