Godrej Sara Lee acquires Sara Lee Household and Body Care

New Delhi: Godrej Sara Lee Ltd, the joint venture company between the Godrej Group and US based Sara Lee Corporation, has acquired Sara Lee Household and Body Care, India and its subsidiary in Sri Lanka with effect from 2July 2007.
While Sara Lee has a 5% stake in Godrej Sara Lee Ltd (GSLL), a household product company, it also has an independent unit, Sara Lee Household and Body Care India, which is headquartered in Chennai.
The new unit will market brands like Kiwi Shoe polish, Kiwi Drainex drain cleaner and Hair Care Brand Brylcreem in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal.
Commenting on the acquisition, Mr Adi Godrej, Chairman of the Godrej Group said, “The business and operations of Sara Lee Household and Body Care will be transferred to GSLL with effect from July07.”
Further Mr A Mahendran, Managing Director, Godrej Sara Lee Ltd added, “Sara Lee was keen on moving all its brands to one company to efficiently manage its portfolio in South Asia. By moving these brands to GSLL, Sara Lee will have access to the Godrej distribution network, as well as the management and marketing support.”
Godrej Sara Lee Ltd. is a Sara Lee - Godrej JV Company formed in 1995. It is one of India’s largest household insecticide company with three major brands called GoodKnight, JET and HIT command over one-third share of the household insecticides market in India. Apart from these brands GSLL also markets Sara Lee’s air purifier brand, Ambi Pur.
The company’s R&D centre approved by The Department of Science & Technology, Government of India is the largest in the country. It aims to develop environmentally safe, legally approved, effective and economic formulations for total pest control. The new company will some of its brands in South Africa, Middle East, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Egypt.
