Walk into the Build-A-Bear Workshop days before the opening and you may find luxury retailer Mohan Murjani pressing buttons that say “Wolf, wolf” or “I love you”, among the options that can become the voice of a cuddly toy.
US-based personalized toy chain Build-A-Bear Workshop’s first India store will open on Thursday in Mumbai’s Juhu suburb. The chain provides shoppers a chance to create personalized stuffed toys. This means taking a bear, cow, dog or turtle, stuffing it, giving it a heart and then personalizing it.
Murjani’s inspiration for opening this store came two years back when he and his wife came across Build-A-Bear Workshop in New York while looking for a gift for their grandson.
Murjani said shopping there was such a unique experience that he thought this would work in India. And he had the right contacts. Build-A-Bear founder Maxine Clark had bought Gloria Vanderbuilt jeans from Murjani in the 1970s. He gave her a call and now there’s one store in Juhu, to be followed by a national rollout.
