Mumbai: Tata Motors Ltd, India’s largest auto maker by sales, will accept online bookings for its upcoming compact car model Bolt, the company said in a statement.

“Customers can book the Bolt online and make a payment of 11,000," it said.

Based on the Zest sedan platform, the Bolt is the second brand new vehicle in line under the company’s so-called Horizonext strategy.

As part of this strategy, the company plans to launch several new models in the passenger vehicle market and spruce up its after sales service.

Tata Motors launched the Zest in August and sells an average 3,000 to 3,500 units per month.

The Bolt is the second model after the Nano for which the company is offering the option of online booking.

The Bolt, which is likely to go on sale next month, will have petrol and diesel options. In the petrol version, Bolt will be the segment’s first hatchback to be powered by the 1.2L turbocharged multi-point fuel injection (MPFi) petrol engine.

It will also feature—for the first time eve—a multi-drive function, allowing the user to drive in sport, city or eco modes, the company said.

The success of both Zest and Bolt are critical to the turnaround of Tata Motors’ passenger car business strategy. The maker of Nano and Indica models has been taking a beating from rivals in the absence of new, contemporary models. In the first eight months of the current financial year, the company’s passenger car sales dropped 14% to 63,095 units. Reuters
