New Delhi: Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari expressed concern over growing incidents of terrorism and Naxalite acts in the country.

While releasing a book on “Political violence and the police in India," authored by K.S.Subramanian, retired IPS officer, the vice president said that the book was topical and relevant for it gave an overview of the role of various police organizations in tackling terrorist activities and political violence.

Increasing political violence in India is challenging the government’s ability to resolve conflicts democratically. Pointing out that the Central Government takes action on any political violence in the state only when the state government asks the Centre to do so, Ansari said this needs to be addressed on priority

The author identifies patterns and trends in political violence in India and examines how the government’s political machinery has responded. He explains why State response has been inadequate and recommends changes in structures and attitudes.

The growing crisis of governance is taken up by assessing the Central and state governments’ police organizations, especially key central agencies such as the Intelligence Bureau, the Central Paramilitary Forces and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

In case studies of regions and communities affected by political violence, Subramanian takes the reader behind the scenes—whether it is on police partisanship in the communal pogrom in Gujarat, the official approach to the Naxalite problem, the violence against dalits and adivasis, or the violation of human rights in northeast India.
