The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017, being staged in Las Vegas, is showcasing exciting new gadgets and technology. Here is a list of some of the gadgets, concepts and automotive technology vying for consumers’ attention at the annual event.
LG W7 Signature 4K OLED
This television is pure wall art, and is just 3.85mm thick (the iPhone 7 is 7.1mm thick). The reason is that the processing hardware and ports are packed inside the Dolby Atmos sound bar attachment. The W7’s 65-inch panel has 4K resolution, and offers high dynamic range (HDR) picture quality. Pricing details are awaited.
Sony Bravia XBR-A1E 4K OLED
Sony’s first OLED (organic light-emitting diode) TV supports Dolby Vision HDR, 4K HDR X1 image processor, and runs Google’s Android TV. Sony says that the TV is speakerless, with sound emerging from vibrations in the screen. Will be available in 55-inch, 65-inch, and 77-inch screen sizes. Prices are awaited.
BMW i Inside Future
The German carmaker BMW believes we’ll be sitting in a car similar to this by the year 2020. Microsoft’s voice assistant Cortana has been integrated, as is the gesture-control HoloActive Touch, through which passengers can control the infotainment system without ever needing to touch the screen. And not to forget the ultramodern interiors.
Hyundai H-MEX
The carmaker has been working on a wearable robot which can help paraplegics walk again. The Hyundai Medical Exoskeleton is made for people suffering from lower spinal cord injuries, and gives them the ability to sit, stand, turn around, and even walk up or down stairs.
Asus Zenfone AR
The ZenFone AR supports Google’s Tango platform for Augmented Reality (AR) on smartphones. It uses a triple sensor 23-megapixel camera to track movement and depth perception. The phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, has 8GB RAM and a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display (2,560x1,440 pixels).
New Balance RunIQ
Shoe company has made its first Android Wear smartwatch, relying on expertise from Intel (hardware), Google (software), and Strava (fitness tracking). It has a built-in GPS and heart rate monitor for tracking runs, and is waterproof up to 5ATM of pressure. Will sport a price tag of $299.99.
Hyundai Ioniq
What makes the Ioniq different from the rest of the pack is the South Korean automaker’s mission of making a mass market electric autonomous vehicle. It runs a 28 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, with a range of 250 km. Hyundai’s engineers have hidden all the cameras and sensors to make the car look like a conventional hatchback.
LG Gram 14
This attempt at making an Apple MacBook rival will run Intel’s new Kaby Lake processors, up to 512GB of solid-state storage, up to 16GB of RAM, and 1,920 x 1,080-pixel resolution IPS (in-plane switching) touchscreens. The real highlight is the claimed 23-hour battery life. Pricing details are awaited.
Asus Zenbook 3 Deluxe
The ZenBook 3 Deluxe packs in a 14-inch display inside a 13-inch chassis size, by thinning the bezels around the screen. The ultra-slim Windows laptop will run Intel’s latest Core i7 Kaby Lake processors, offer up to 16GB of RAM, and up to 1TB SSD (solid-state drive) storage. Prices start at $1,699.
Toyota Concept-i
For once, a Toyota vehicle that does not allow the word “boring" within 500 miles of itself. Artificial Intelligence assistant Yui will learn about the driver and “build a meaningful relationship" with him or her by measuring emotions and situations where the vehicle may need to take control from the driver.
Asus HiveSpot and HiveDot
Wi-Fi mesh systems are becoming popular as users struggle with dead-signal zones in their homes. Asus has unveiled the HiveSport and HiveDot mesh WiFi systems at CES 2017, promising a “reliable, ultra-fast and secure whole-home wireless coverage." Priced at $400.
Huawei Mate 9
Huawei’s flagship Android phone runs the Kirin 960 processor, offers 4GB RAM, a 5.9-inch 1080p display and 4000mAh battery. Huawei says it will use machine learning to tweak the chip’s performance via updates. Mate 9 rolls out in the US this month, with Amazon’s Alexa digital assistant integrated. Priced at $600.
