‘Best of British’ comes to Delhi

New Delhi: The international quotient at the Delhi Fashion Week is considerably high. Not only are international models walking the ramp for Indian designers (for the first time no less), some designers are even exhibiting their own work for the very first time.

Eleven British designers are showcasing in India and are brought here by an organization called “Best of British" or, BoB for short. The designs include accessories and ready-to-wears for the spring-summer collection.

They have worked for houses like Channel and Vitton before. They have done collaborative work. These people want to come up with their own, and show what they can do apart from what they’ve designed for the houses."

The young designers who are exhibiting in Delhi are just two to three seasons old in Europe, and are looking for a foothold in the Indian markets. They hope to form long-term collaborations with stockists who would not just house their products but also work towards building brand names. Indian designers think its great that the fashion industry is getting more global and hope that these collaborations will work both ways.

"The trend has been there in other countries for a long time but is just coming to India. I think it’s interesting and truly global," says Rajvi Mohan, a fashion designer also showcasing at the Delhi Fashion Week.

BoB thinks the biggest challenge in the Indian market is price points. It hopes to start production in India to make cheaper merchandise without compromising on the quality.

"Our objective is to find stockists for the brands, for stores here to bring them in. At the same time we are helping them source production facilities so that to make prices much more accessible to the market," says Cheng. The designs have been brought to India through collaboration between BOHO London, the label of Indian designers Radhika and Amit Rastogi, and Glamour Inc.

BoB has been showcasing British designs in south east Asia since the early 2000s, but this is its debut show in India.
