Indians estimate the value of photos, videos, music, documents and digital work stored on their electronic devices at $41,589 ( 25 lakh) on average, according to the findings of a survey on digital assets by computer security firm McAfee Inc.. This is the second-highest in the world, after North Americans who value them at an average $52,154 ( 31 lakh).

Around 29% of Indian respondents claimed to have personal memories on their digital devices, valuing them at 5,000-25,000, while 10% said hobbies and projects saved on their digital devices may cost between 25,000 and 55,000.

The online survey included 680 male and 321 female Indian respondents aged 18-65.

India’s figures are comparatively high, considering the average digital assets are worth $28,461 per person across Europe (UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, The Netherlands), $23,938 in Japan and $20,948 in Australia.

Almost half of the Indian respondents said they owned three-to-four devices each. Of this, 49% were male and 46% were female.

A third of Indian respondents said they spend between five and 10 hours a week on their mobile devices, while 24% said they spend over 20 hours on their mobile devices for personal use.

However, the survey revealed that only 38% of the respondents secured their smartphones and 15% of them claimed to protect their tablets. Some 70% said they secured Windows-based laptops and 66% said they secured their personal computers.

“Smartphones and tablets are more likely to be targeted by hackers due to their huge proliferation. However, the respondents are yet to adopt the right security measures to secure their smartphones and tablets," said the survey.

Forty one percent of the respondents believe security is too expensive, although 49% are familiar with current cyber risks and security dangers to their digital device, the survey found.

“With the proliferation and adoption of multiple Internet enabled devices in Indian households, there is a compelling need to store and secure personal data and identity across all the devices," said Jagdish Mahapatra, managing director, India and SAARC, McAfee, part of Intel Security.
