Colombo: Sri Lanka has banned two cricket umpires who were accused in an Indian television sting last year as having agreed to accept money in return for pre-determined decisions in matches.
Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement on Tuesday that Sagara Gallage has been banned from all forms of cricket for 10 years and Maurice Zilva for three years. A third umpire, Gamini Dissanayake, was reprimanded and stood down from officiating in first-class cricket for a year.
All three umpires are prominent officials. Dissanayake has been appointed fourth umpire in several international limited-over matches.
A television broadcast last October accused six umpires from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan of being involved in corruption.
