New Delhi: Luciano Pavarotti, Frank Sinatra and Mozart were all present at the first day of the Delhi Fashion Week. Of course they were not visible. Rakish, classical and at times even peppy, the music matched every swish of a dress and stomp of the heel as the five-day fashion jamboree kicked off at the Emporio Mall.
Just as every nip and every tuck ahead of the show determine the right look for the model, music composers too know that the right beat is essential to the success of the show.

DJ Whosane!, a disc jockey and composer at the Fashion Week says, “The range is really diverse. That’s one of the reasons why I enjoy it so much, because it puts you to test. And it’s a
serious challenge. You need to be up to date with a whole variety of music and at the same time figure out how to blend and mix it together to make it work for the show.”
DJ Whosane! has been composing for the shows since year 2000 when the fashion week first started in New Delhi. And he says the days of matching just plain tracks to a catwalk are long gone. Every piece of music that is played is unique to the designer and his theme and is composed to shock, awe and keep you excited through the show.
”I think it sets the mood. If I had no music you guys would be yawning at my collection. If I had different music it might not have gone down so well. I think the fact that there was a western music selection with an India beats it kept everyone entertained cause it kept people guessing,” said Rajvi Mohan a fashion designer showcasing for the first time at the Delhi Fashion Week.
Composers at the fashion week say it will take a long time before music composed at the shows are converted into CDs and sold as is the trend abroad. “It’s only Bollywood that sells in India,” said DJ Whosane!
The job just doesn’t involve mixing soundtracks and keeping with the theme. But giving models the cue to walk and turn and even handling emergencies like changing the music for the showstopper five minutes before the show. But composers say, though the music demands have gotten more complex the competition is forcing rates down. Now that’s surely music for the ears of designers.
