Modi and BCCI given one week to resolve row
New Delhi/Mumbai: Former Indian Premier League (IPL) Commissioner Lalit Modi and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have been given a week by the Supreme Court to resolve the dispute surrounding the disciplinary committee investigating the former’s alleged wrong-doings in the IPL. Modi wants that the BCCI reconstitute the committee as he believes the members to be biased.
BCCI has thus far refused to do so and continued to hold this position even on Thursday.
“It is not possible. It is in an advanced stage. It is a fact-finding and an internal committee. We cannot have external members in it," BCCI’s counsel and senior advocate C S Sundaram told a Bench, comprising Justices J M Panchal and Gyan Sudha Mishra, which wanted the Board to explore the possibility of reconstituting the disciplinary committee.
On being asked about the latest developments, Ratnakar Shetty the chief administrative officer for the BCCI said “the BCCI has not asked for this (one week to solve matter amicably). I have no further comment to make."
Other senior BCCI officials refused comment on the matter as it was still subjudice.
Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate is likely to book Modi under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), which gives the Directorate the power to arrest and attach properties.
Official sources said the ED, which is probing Modi under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), was making the move based on the FIR filed by BCCI secretary N Srinivasan.
The ED is studying the FIR, filed for alleged misappropriation of funds to the tune of ₹ 470 crore, to find out whether the provisions can be used for booking Modi under the PMLA, they said.
