Mumbai: Nimbus Communications, the company that owns the broadcast rights for all cricket matches organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, is considering launching a 24-hour sports news channel. If it is launched, this will be the company’s third channel after its cricket channel NEO Sports and NEO Sports Plus, which covers other sports.
“It’s a preliminary thought,” said Shashi Kalathil, the chief executive of Neo Sports Broadcast, Nimbus’ broadcast arm. “We had asked ourselves whether there would be enough viewership for a sports news channel and there are some indications that there would be.”
The Indian news channel market is a crowded one, with over 21 mainstream channels in English and Hindi alone. Nimbus’ channel, should it be launched, will be India’s first sports news channel.
Sports news is a module on general news channels and sports channels. “It (the idea of launching a sports news channel in India) is rather ambitious,” said S,Rajesh, an editor at Cricinfo, a magazine and website focused on cricket. “I do not know how they’ll fill up 24 hours with sports news.”
