The sell-out crowd of 55,000 was delighted to the innings from New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum. Playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders, partly owned by Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan, McCullum hit 158 not out in a match easily won by his side. The match was heralded by a generous opening ceremony at the ground. Tumblers, singers and cheerleaders from the Washington Redskins were witnessed performing to a setting of fireworks. But the home team, the Bangalore Royal Challengers was severely beaten by 140 runs. The idols will get around £100,000 a week during the event, putting them on alike pay to the world’s top footballers, although for a restricted period.
