The 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne featured a shock win in the men’s table tennis singles by the then relatively unknown A. Sharath Kamal, who coupled it with gold in the men’s team event. Kamal, who broke into the top 40 in the world this year before dropping out, will be looking to use the home advantage to defend his title in New Delhi in a sport traditionally dominated by China, Singapore and other Asian nations in international tournaments.

Table tennis was introduced in the Commonwealth Games at the 2002 Manchester edition. Since then, Singapore has been the most dominant nation in the sport, winning the most gold medals in past editions of the Games, while England and India have both had their share of victories. With A. Sharath Kamal looking to defend his title and Tianwei Feng, the women’s world No. 2 in the reckoning, the table tennis event is set for some high-octane action at the Games.
