New Delhi: SaMaPa (Sopori Academy of Music And Performing Arts) has conferred this year’s ‘SaMaPa Vitasta Award’ to tabla maestro Padma Vibhushan Pt. Kishan Maharaj and veteran music composer Sh. Khayyam.
Pandit Kishan Maharaj is being awarded the ‘SaMaPa Vitasta Award 2007’ for his lifetime contribution in Indian Classical Instrumental Music (Tabla) and is being honoured for his lifetime contribution in music direction.
The award announcement was made by the youngest Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee (Ust. Bismillah Khan Puraskar) - Santoor Maestro and Music Composer Abhay Rustum Sopori.
It will be presented on the occasion of ‘SaMaPa Sangeet Sammelan 2007’ in Delhi at Kamani Auditorium on the 1 Dec ‘07. The two-day festival shall feature more than 75 performers.
‘Vitasta’, the ancient name of River Jehlum, symbolizes the cultural ethos of J&K State and the award which has been instituted to honour the country’s legendary musicians and musicologists will contribute significantly in propagating and preserving its cultural heritage.
Past recipients include Girija Devi (vocal), Hema Malini (dance), Pt. Ramashrey Jha (vocal & musicology) and Shameem Azad (Kashmiri folk & light music).
