New Delhi: At a time when Indian art and artists are fetching a handsome price for their paintings in the international market, learning to package their product smartly, appointing art consultants to represent them and walking away with never before kind of figures tagged to their works, there is an equally quiet attempt by them to align themselves to causes that are close to their heart.

Proof of this is the latest auction that is going to be held in the capital tomorrow where 90 leading artists and sculptors from across the country have come together under the banner of HelpAge India and Habiart Foundation, to help raise funds for the silver haired elders to live a life of greater dignity and respect.
“Art for Aged” is the theme that runs through the selection that would see works by contemporary masters. Saleable artistes like Gopi Gajwani, Satish Gujral, Jatin Das, Krishen Khanna will pitch some of their best works along with new artists. Rare works by artistes such as Jamini Roy will also be on display
According to Mathew Cherian, chief executive, HelpAge, the first charity art auction in India was organized by HelpAge in 1991 when artists had stepped forward to create larger awareness about art and to donate proceeds of the sale to a cause.
The auction will see the works of Hemi Bawa, Sanjay Bhattacharya, Shobha Broota, Arpana Caur, Jagdish Chander, Jatin Das, Sunil Das, Suhas Roy, Jaideep Mehrotra, Sanatan Dinda, Bose Krishnamachari, Jogen Chowdhury, Paritosh Sen, T. Vaikuntham, Subrato Gangopadhyay, Gopi Gajwani, Satish Gujral, S. Harshvardhana, Kavita Jaiswal, Krishen Khanna, Naresh Kapuria, Ram Kumar, K. Khosa, Seema Kohli, Sudip Roy, Bulbul Sharma, Gogi Sarojpal and Jai Zharotia.
Paintings will be displayed on 19Jan from 11am – 4pm and the auction itself will take place from 5pm; online bidding will be through www.artforaged.com
