New Delhi: A group of Sierra Leonean football players were recently surprised when sports star and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham joined their informal game at a roadside pitch.
Beckham made the visit following a return from a tour of UNICEF-supported programmes in Bombali District. He was in Sierra Leone last weekend for four days. As UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador he drew international attention to the issue of child survival.
His visit hopes to rekindle hope in the hearts of a ravaged nation which has miserably suffered 12 years of civil war, where child deaths are the highest in the world. His feedback would be critical to help review the quality and impact of the programmes that are aimed at helping children survive as also spread awareness globally on issues of concern. His participating in a roadside football (soccer) game evoked a lot of cheer amongst grown ups and children who idolize him.
