Digital distribution to change face of film industry: Study

Panaji: Digital distribution and exhibition of movies is expected to change the face of the film industry in more ways than one, experts have said.
“While digitilization will impact all parts of the film industry’s value chain, the maximum impact will be felt at the consumer end," a research paper presented by Saurine Doshi, partner, A T Kearney firm, mentions.
Kearney, which did the study on behalf of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), presented the study during the two-day long “India-the big picture" conference which started today on the eve of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
Highlighting the impact of digitilization, the study mentions that the phenomenon will not only eliminate the cost of physical print but will also facilitate the release of a movie across multiple locations minimizing the loss to piracy and negative word-of-mouth.
“This will therefore result in improved viability of theatres in smaller towns on account of higher potential utilisations," it reads.
Presenting the paper in presence of Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat, Information and Broadcasting Secretary Asha Swarup, Chief Secretary J P Singh and others, Doshi said that large multiplex will also be encouraged to enter the smaller towns with digitilization.
While there is latent demand that exists in these towns for a good movie viewing experience, large exhibition networks have restricted their presence to metros, mainly on account of poor viability of multiplex type of screening experience in non-metros, he said.
