Scans rule out fracture or ligament tear, but there's enough damage for Yuvraj Singh to miss India's World T20 knockouts campaign

India’s worst fears came true on Wednesday as Yuvraj Singh was ruled out of the remainder of the ICC World Twenty20 2016 with an ankle injury, a day before their semifinal against West Indies.

The International Cricket Council confirmed that the Event Technical Committee had approved Manish Pandey, the Karnataka batsman who joined the team as cover for Yuvraj Singh on Monday, as the replacement player.

Singh, the Player of the Tournament when India won the 50-over World Cup at home in 2011, suffered the injury while batting in the final Super 10 Group 2 game against Australia in Mohali, which India won by six wickets to qualify for the semifinals. While MRI scans had ruled out a fracture or ligament tear, there was enough damage for him not to recover fully in time for the semifinal.

Pandey, 26, has played two T20 Internationals, both against Zimbabwe in Harare last July. He played the last of his four One-Day Internationals against Australia in Sydney, when he scored a match-winning unbeaten maiden century. That match, on 23 January, was Pandey’s last competitive fixture.

India must now decide if Pandey should straightaway replace Singh in the playing XI, or if Ajinkya Rahane, the local lad who has been a part of the T20I team for a long time now, should come in instead. Rahane’s last T20I outing was during the Asia Cup against Pakistan in Mirpur, when he was trapped in front for a duck by Mohammad Amir.

There could also be a temptation to bring in Pawan Negi, the left-handed allrounder who can offer a few overs of left-arm spin too, but whether India would be willing to take that risk remains to be seen. As it is, the batting has been a little light with the exception of Virat Kohli, so India might think twice before thrusting the inexperienced Negi, who has played just one T20I, into the cauldron of a semifinal.
