Indian sports fans enthused about Beijing Games: Survey

Mumbai: Cricket may rule the roost in the sub-continent but fans in Asia, particularly India, are also eager to find out medal prospects of the national athletes in the upcoming Olympic Beijing Olympic Games, according to a survey conducted in the region.
A high number of Indian sports followers, constituting 72% of those surveyed by Games partners Visa, were keen to know about the country’s sportspersons’ preparations and chances of a podium finish at the Games, a media release said today.
Of the more than 4500 persons surveyed from seven out of nine regional markets, 74% of respondents ranked the Olympics as the most popular global sporting event on a 1-5 scale, ahead of the FIFA World Cup (given top scores by 59%), and the ICC Cricket World Cup (given top scores by 37%), it said.
The Games also scored over other sports events like the Asian Games, preferred as their top event by 49% respondents, and Formula 1 racing (36%), the release added.
