New Delhi: Carrying the Richard Gere-Shilpa Shetty kissing controversy to an extreme, were the court orders, issuing arrest warrants for the film stars turned AIDS activists, for offending local sensibilities.
Judge Dines Gupta issued the warrants in Jaipur after a local citizen filed a complaint charging the actors that their public display of affection was an “obscene act".
It was not immediately clear how the warrant would affect Gere, a frequent visitor to India. While the event has garnered much media coverage, the intelligentsia in India has been upset about what they feel is a non issue. Shilpa herself has been distressed and sympathetic towards Gere. She has gone on record to say that, this petty response takes away the good work that the Hollywood actor has done.
Organizer of the much publicized AIDS event, Parmeshwar Godrej also called the controversy “a distraction from more important issues".
While the case itself may languish in the court, sporadic updates on this publicized event is ensuring that news on the subject is kept alive, for better or worse! At one level it puts the spotlight on the Indian media, who are being increasingly criticized for sensationalizing non happenings and/or dragging things beyond what should be their legitimiate lifespan.
