Mumbai Indians take IPL but Chennai Super Kings win Twitter war
Unsuprisingly, the final game was the most talked-about match of the season, followed by the tournament opener
Twitter recorded over 350 million live impressions during the eighth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), according to data released by the social networking company. After a dramatic run of wins, which included the final, the Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) were crowned champions on Sunday. The much-fancied Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were the losing finalists.
Unsuprisingly, the final game was the most talked-about match of the season, followed by the tournament opener between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and MI. CSK’s one-run win over the Delhi Daredevils in the second match of the IPL generated the third-highest buzz, while the rivalry between the CSK and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has over the years emerged as a major talking point between the fans of both sets. The qualifier between CSK and MI also made it to the top 5 of the most tweeted matches list.
The moment when MI were confirmed champions after they beat CSK by 41 runs, was the most tweeted moment of the tournament, based on Twitter’s Tweets Per Minute (TPM) algorithm. Two other moments from the final made it to Twitter’s top five list, including Ravichandran Ashwin’s dismissal, which left CSK reeling at 137/7 in their pursuit of a steep 203-run target. A selfie with Sachin Tendulkar by commentator and former Aussie opening batsman Matthew Hayden was the fifth-most tweeted moment in the entire tournament. Other moments included Ashwin’s single against RCB to put CSK through to the final (2nd most tweeted) and CSK’s one-run win over DD early in the tournament.
The orange cap (or the most tweeted batsman) went to AB de Villiers of the RCB, followed by his teammate Chris Gayle and CSK captain MS Dhoni. The purple cap, or the most tweeted bowler, turned out to be Ashish Nehra, the 36-year-old who led Chennai’s bowling attack for most of the tournament. Dwayne Bravo and Harbhajan Singh were second and third in the list.
The most mentioned Indian players included three of the biggest stars in Indian cricket at the moment—Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, in that order. The most mentioned international players featured de Villiers, Gayle and David Warner of the Sunrisers Hyderabad. de Villiers was also the most mentioned player on Twitter during IPL 8.
CSK might have not won the IPL alright, but their team finished the season as the most tweeted team during the tournament. They were followed by Kolkata Knight Riders and the eventual champions Mumbai Indians.
