New Delhi: As weddings get more elaborate, events around it are getting more innovative and profitable.

An exhibition that brought together under one roof 50 exhibitors (domestic designers, merchandizers and service providers) in 1999 has today grown to a host over 400 exclusive brands, from India and abroad, vying for prime space, ensuring 60% of their space bookings a year in advance.

Dubai-based, Divya Gurware, knew all along that the concept was a winner and being an early mover in the field, she was quick to establish herself by some smart planning.

The 2007 Bridal Asia, scheduled for 16-18 at the Hotel Ashok in New Delhi, was previewed at The Grand in Vasant Kunj last week and with the city’s glitterati in attendance, it clearly seemed that the target audience now went even beyond just the marriage market.

A series of previews have been planned before the final event. Deisgners who unveiled collections last week were Riddhima Kapoor and Devyani’s Ara; Bhairavi Jaikishan and Malini Agarwalla’s Malaga (bags) and Nalandda Bhandari’s Nasha . This week it has been Anita Dongre, Abha Dalmia and Malini Ramani.

Peek preview by fashion designers

‘Anita Dongre Indian Soul’ represented a range that moved from western prêt to Indian luxury with a smattering of rich traditional fabrics like brocades, pure hand woven Benarasi silks and Rajasthani tie and die.

Abha Dalmia’s silks were resplendent in greens, maroons, pinks and greys with rich textures, dainty floral patterns, badla work and zari. Saris and ghagras saw a liberal use was made of the dying kali art.

Malini Ramani exuded freshness with her signature style, giving the bride-to-be options of dressing in bold and unconventional styles. Using a wide colour palatte, with necklines that dare the décolleté, these had provocative slits, with a smattering of sequins, all combined in a heady cocktail
