ESPN Star Sports acquires mobile rights for Wimbledon in India

New Delhi: ESPN Star Sports has bagged the rights for providing a comprehensive range of mobile content related to the high profile Grand Slam Wimbledon 2007 in India
The mobile ESPN service will provide official video clips, match score updates, player specific contents, wallpapers and official Wimbledon ringtone ‘Purple and Green’, a company release said.
The video clips would contain a daily dose of the Championship’s daily preview, individual match highlights, player interviews and daily round up and archive clips of the golden moments and the 2006 championships round-up, it said.
“There is a huge market to be tapped as there is a growing audience for sports such as soccer, motorsports and tennis. We expect a significant demand for video clips of exciting moments of Wimbledon given the popularity of the tournament in India. There is a huge fan following for players like Federer, Nadal, Sharapova and India’s very own Sania Mirza," ESPN Software India Ad Sales, Business Development and New Media Vice-President Sanjay Kailash said.
He said this was just the beginning of a series of events that Mobile ESPN was planning to unleash.
Mobile ESPN will aggregate a Wimbledon 2007 zone on WAP portals of all leading telcos in India including Airtel, Hutch, Idea, and BSNL, R-World and Tata Indicom. The mobile users would be able to download unlimited content at a rental of ₹ 99 from the zone or pay per download, the release added.
