The 2010 Fifa World Cup final match between the Netherlands and Spain, which was won by the latter, was watched by approximately 4.16 million viewers in the country’s top six metro cities—Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad, according to data from TAM Media Research Pvt. Ltd.

In comparison, the 2006 world Cup final was watched by 3.9 million viewers in the top six metros. According to the data, the proportion of women viewers of the soccer tournament increased by one percentage point to 33% in 2010 from the 2006 event. On the whole, 32.6 million viewers watched the 2010 tournament in the top six metros, compared with 16.2 million in 2006. According to estimates by media buyers, broadcaster ESPN Star Sports raked in approximately Rs100 crore in sponsorships and advertising during the World Cup 2010.
