Mumbai: YouTube, the video-sharing website from Google Inc., announced the launch of the Comedy Week India, on Thursday. The programme, with approximately 400 hours of curated content, will run from 5 to 12 September.
The show is being launched in collaboration with Indian content producers and will feature a range of content including best comedy scenes from Bollywood, all-time favourite TV comedy shows, such as Comedy Nights with Kapil, The Great Indian Laughter Challenge and MTV Bakra, etc., the best of Indian mimicry, and Indian regional language comedy content in Telgu, Tamil, Marathi, Punjabi, Malayalam, Gujarati and Kannada.
“Here in India, comedy shows contribute to over 30% of total watch hours within the TV shows category, and in the past year, comedy show viewership has shown one of fastest growth in viewership. Bringing Comedy Week to India allows us to give India’s audiences more of the content they love and discover new content that they can only enjoy on YouTube,” said Gautam Anand, director, content partnerships for YouTube APAC.
According to data supplied by Google, comedy as a genre is big for YouTube globally, with seven out of 10 of the most popular channels being based on comedy. In India, it’s the fastest growing genre within the television shows category on YouTube. Comedy shows contribute over 30% of total watch hours within the TV shows category, and the shows in this genre have consistently ranked within the top five shows viewed, followed closely by drama.
