New Delhi: Top paddlers from 16 nations will slug it out at the 17th Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships to be held in Jaipur from May 30 to June 5.
The tournament will be played out in two phases with men’s and women’s team events scheduled first from May 30 to June 2, followed by the singles competition from June 2-5.
Paddlers from North Ireland, Australia, Wales, England, Pakistan, Nigeria, New Zealand, Singapore, Kenya, Scotland, Maldives, Canada, South Africa, Cyprus, Malaysia and Bangladesh along with hosts India will compete in the searing heat of Jaipur during the eight-day tournament.
India, which is defending champion in men’s team championship and has also clinched the men’s singles title through reigning national champion Achanta Sharath Kamal, is for the time being focused on the upcoming World Championship in Croatia starting May 21.
Preparations for the tournament have started with the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) sending the team comprising Soumyadeep Roy, Subhajit Saha, Anirban Nandi and Pathik Mehta to Germany for a 15-day exposure trip.
The team will be playing against some top players at the German club Borussian Dusseldorf. Reigning National champion Sharath has, however, decided to give the 15-day trip a miss as he is playing in Austria.
Meanwhile, Soumyadeep, Anirban, Subhajit and Pathik have left for Germany and they will be there till May 19 before leaving for the World Championship on May 20. Sharath is not there as he is playing Austria - were details which the TTFI secretary general MC Chowhan revealed to PTI.
