Rooting for Rahman
New Delhi: An excited India is waiting to see whether AR Rahman will join the ranks of academy award winners Irwin Kostal for the Sound of Music, John Williams for Jaws and Star Wars, and James Horner for Titanic, all of whom won the Oscar for best original scores.
43-year-old Rahman has been nominated for three Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire in two categories that include Best Original score and Best Original Song.

Indian Resul Pookutty was also nominated in the sound-mixing category. “I think in the past decade our technology has become really good", says music critic Lalitha Suhasini. “We see it as a coming of age but it’s been long overdue."
Till date, only two Indians have won the Oscars. Bhanu Athaiya won the award for costume design in the movie “Gandhi" and Satyajit Ray was given an honorary Oscar in 1992. “There are many people who can make it in the West. But it has to be the right combination, the right place, the right time", says music director Shekhar Ravjiani of the duo Vishal Shekhar. “I’m glad Rahman has been able to do it. No other Indian has achieved this before."
