New Delhi: The United Kingdom will support India’s bid for Olympic Games, 2020 said Ken Livingstone, mayor of London at a conference on ‘London & Delhi: Host Cities – Unlocking Opportunities‘, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) today.
Sharing thoughts on the hosting of the Olympic Games by London in 2012 and the Commonwealth Games by Delhi in 2010, the mayor said these efforts would enhance opportunities for Delhi and London to develop relationships while strengthening social, cultural and economical bonding.
Sporting events of this magnitude help improve skills of the local community which in turn would push up the quality of transportation and urban infrastructure.
An MoU has been signed with UNEP for the Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi, announced Suresh Kalmadi, chairman of the organizing committee of Commonwealth Games 2010 and president, Indian Olympic Association and this would be the first step towards having a green Commonwealth Games.
All stakeholders in the infrastructural development of Commonwealth Games 2010 were requested to hand-over complete facilities to the organizing committee by December 2009. Electricity, water supply and city infrastructure are likely to go through a rapid process of development in Delhi to meet the deadline.
Indian IT companies can partner Olympic Games’ organizing committee of London to provide Games Management System, suggested Kalmadi to the mayor of London.
According to Lord Sebastian Coe, chairman, London Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, mega sporting events create job opportunities and improvement of urban infrastructure which contributes to the sustainable development of local community much after the games are over.
The challenge for a city is to avail all possible amenities for the games and leave a lasting legacy for years to come. It is important to drive educational and cultural values to the games and engage young people into the process, he said. Hosting a mega-sporting event is an opportunity for a city to feature in the world map and create role models.
By hosting these mega sporting events, tourism in both countries will receive a considerable boost, resultantly creating an upswing in the demand for hotels, airlines, tours and travel industry. Planning, design, construction, management of the sports complex and stadia, hotels, roads, flyovers and transport infrastructure will also provide greater opportunity for infrastructure development.
Adding the environment friendly angle would ensure that carbon emissions will be minimized during the games through initiatives like recycling of water, energy conservation and adopting green technologies.
