IGNOU launches science and technology channel
New Delhi: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is all set to launch a TV channel dedicated to science and technology programmes.
The new channel will cater a bouquet of programmes based on various aspects of science and technology, IGNOU Vice Chancellor V N Rajasekhran Pillai said here yesterday.
The programmes would initially be telecast in the varsity’s existing Gyan Darshan-2 channel from tomorrow from 8.10 pm and can be watched in DTH platform of DD Direct Plus, he said.
IGNOU is already running four channels - Gyan Darshan 1 and 2, Vyas, and Eklavya. The Gyan Darshan 1 and 2 air educational programmes of the university while contents for Vyas and Eklavya are contributed by UGC and IITs respectively.
“The new channel will cover all fields of sciences - research, history, applications, philosophy - and will telecast them in the form of educative and entertaining programmes to enable people understand issues of concerns and address these through participatory process," Pillai said.
The test transmission of the channel will continue for a few months after which the new channel - Gyan Darshan-5 - would be started with eight to ten hours of broadcasting time, IGNOU Director of Electronic Media Production Centre, V K Arora said.
The content for the new channel will be contributed by several scientific institution of the country including Department of Science and Technology, Arora added.
