New Delhi: The first match of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy played on 22 September between teams South Africa and Sri Lanka brought in television rating point (TRP) of 0.9% on ESPN Software India Ltd’s Star Cricket channel, according Audience Measurement Analytics Ltd, a television audience measurement agency.

Compare this to the inaugural matches of the two recently concluded twenty-over tournaments, Indian Premier League (IPL) where the first match got TRPs of 3.2% and the ICC Twenty20 World Cup 1.1%, and the low ratings of the Champions Trophy could signify a flailing interest in 50-over formats for the country.

However, experts in the field say it is still a wait-and-watch situation and that the real conclusion can be made only once India gets around to the field, which will be on 26 September in its match against Pakistan. India was not among the teams playing yesterday which could be why the ratings were not very high so we will have to wait and see till Saturday, said Mahesh Ranka, general manager, Relay Worldwide, the aports marketing arm of Starcom MediaVest Group.

Ranka added that twenty-over tournaments have changed the ball game for cricket in terms of the high TRPS recorded. “If you go back to the ODI history, 0.9 is actually not bad at all
