London: Rare works of art by nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and other artists from Santiniketan are on display for a week at the prestigious Royal College of Art in London.
“A total of 137 pieces of art works of 56 painters - ranging from old masters Rabindranath Tagore, to young and emerging artists - are on show,” said Sangeeta Ahuja, director of S A Fine Arts.
Describing it as a unique exhibition, the High Commissioner of India to the UK Shiv Shankar Mukherjee said, “The very name of Santiniketan brings to our mind, images of outstanding art, education and way of life.”
Ahuja said that barring the paintings of the old masters which are from private collections, the rest of the art works would be on sale. Celebrated work, “Reclining woman” by Jogen Chowdhury at 30,000 pounds is the highest priced work on display, she added.
“Santiniketan is so unique, so utterly steeped in history. This is nothing like I have done before. It’s an entirely new concept - to exhibit works by painters from a particular institution,” Ahuja said.
