Ahmedabad: In an attempt to accelerate sales of its Nano car, Tata Motors Ltd on Tuesday launched a version fuelled by compressed natural gas (CNG) priced at 2.45-2.72 lakh ex-showroom Ahmedabad, billing it as the country’s most fuel-efficient car.

The company launched the Nano CNG emax in Ahmedabad, close to Sanand, where it has the main factory for manufacturing the small car.

The new CNG emax variants that were first showcased in June at Tata’s new customer focused initiative called Horizonext comes powered with the same 624cc petrol engine that powers the regular Nano. It has been modified to accommodate the CNG and petrol bi-fuel system.

Launching the vehicle in Ahmedabad, Ankush Arora, senior vice-president, passenger vehicle business unit (commercial), Tata Motors, said: “At Tata Motors, the core philosophy behind the launch of every new vehicle is anticipating what our customers need and blending it with the best-in-class technology and design engineering."

Tata Nano CNG is said to be the most fuel efficient car in the country with a fuel efficiency of 36 km/kg. Tata Motors is offering a warranty of up to 60,000km or four years, whichever is earlier, on the Nano CNG emax. The variant will sold across all CNG market in India such as Delhi, Gujarat, parts of Maharashtra and Lucknow.

Nano, billed as the world’s cheapest car when it was launched, hasn’t managed to achieve the kind of success it had been expected to attain. The company rolls out about 2,000 Nano cars per month from its Sanand plant against a production capacity of 20,000 per month. Nano sales in the last fiscal fell 28% to 53,848 units from a year earlier.
