Enhancing roles: Pegasus is a programme for middle managers.Premium

Enhancing roles: Pegasus is a programme for middle managers.

What: Pegasus is Coca-Cola India’s leadership development programme for middle managers.

When: Launched in 2007 as a six-month development journey, it starts every year in June.

Enhancing roles: Pegasus is a programme for middle managers.

Why: In today’s market, the value proposition offered to employees can’t be aimed solely at compensation and benefits, says Nalin Garg, vice-president, human resources. “It is a business imperative for the company to offer opportunities for development in the current role and also showcase a path of development that will help the employee transition into future roles."

How it works: Sponsored and led by the CEO of the company, the programme starts with participants making contact with an executive coach. The coaching cycle builds upon various actions of a formalized development plan in collaboration with the individual’s supervisor/manager. All the associates undertake live business projects. Leveraging feedback from the coach and the development centre, each participant concludes the programme with a career discussion with the vice-president, HR and the function head. “Overall, the programme has been very well received by the participants and stands testimony to the company’s objective of accelerating potential leaders’ development by putting them on a fast track, both to test and mature them," says Garg.

The results: The programme has effectively managed to link development to the company’s business strategy, so that people with the talent to lead the company are learning what they need to know.

“The set of associates who have undergone the programme play the role of being advisers to the CEO and leadership team when called upon. In addition, it creates a bench of ready-now talent pool for the company to dip into when key strategic roles are available," says Garg.

Some members of the previous programmes have already taken on challenging assignments in international markets, as well as enhanced roles within the Indian business unit.
