Mumbai: The individual contributions to this success are well known, but there is inadequate recognition of the strategic and man management skills of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has become only the second cricket captain after the 1920s Australian W.W. Armstrong not to have lost a match in his first ten matches at the helm; Dhoni has led India to victory in seven of these ten matches.
Dhoni has unique leadership qualities: he is unruffled under pressure, leads from the front, does not indulge in showmanship and keeps it simple. His style is in marked contrast to the more volatile and personality driven style of Saurav Ganguly, another successful captain. There was no ripping off the shirt and waving it to the crowd after the last Sri Lankan wicket fell; just a nonchalant toss of the ball in the air and the gentle uprooting of a stump.
India is a country in love with aggressive leadership styles. Dhoni has a thing or two to teach business and political leaders.
