Toronto: Amid allegations that Jet Airways is allowing Indians to enter Canada with fake travel documents, immigration authorities in Canada have threatened to bar the airlines’ operation if the “security lapse” is not checked.
“The airlines might be barred from operating flights to Canada if its agents didn’t do a better job detecting passengers travelling on bogus passports,” Toronto Star reported Wednesday quoting the authorities.
The report further claimed dozens of their passengers from India are trying to enter into the country with fake travel documents to seek refugee status.
Under Canadian immigration law, most people who arrive at a port of entry are entitled to make a claim for refugee status.
Jet Airways has now “reassigned responsibility for passenger security checks to its security division from its customer service department”, the report said.
“We want to root out this menace as much as anyone,” Jet Airways spokesperson Ragini Chopra was quoted as saying.
Starting this week, Jet employees in Brussels will be trained in identifying fake travel documents, Raja Segram, Jet Airways vice president for European operations, said.
