There has been just about every type of virus known and each year, as an event approaches, a new one seems to hit computers. So here is the first interesting one for 2007: The Valentine’s Day virus.

The virus, a worm, hides in emails with subjects such as: “Together You and I", “Till the End of Time Heart of Mine" and reaches users as an email attachment. Those who open the attachment file (such as postcard.exe) can potentially infect their computers.

Symantec, a leading security company, has said it had detected “large-scale spamming" of emails, including a Trojan horse, a programme that contains or instals a malicious programme. Symantec said the malware was a new version of Trojan, Peacomm or the “Storm Trojan".

So, it’s best if users don’t open any suspicious email, irrespective of who the sender is or what the subject says. A similar “social engineering" technique was used in the LoveLetter virus, which caused one of the biggest epidemics in computer history. So, this Valentine’s Day, just say it with diamonds!

Don’t fake blogs

If you are a business owner and use the interlinked world of blogs and websites to get people to notice you, ensure that the reviews or customer feedback is genuine. A new directive by the European Union (EU) stipulates that business owners found faking blog posts or website comments praising their establishments or products could be prosecuted. The reach of this new directive will cover websites such as Amazon.com. So if an author is found to have written a positive review of his book under a false identity, he is liable for prosecution. Recently, many businesses in the US and UK have admitted to manipulating various ratings systems available. Ever since this had happened, Amazon.com has beefed up its verification process. One really wonders whether there will be a complete halt to such activity.

Flip, flap, phone

At the ongoing 3GSM conference in Barcelona, Nokia has unveiled three new business phones. The launches are the E65 (slider), the E61i and, more significantly, the E90. Nokia’s newest Communicator, the E90, includes all the features that past versions did not have. It has a 3.2 megapixel camera and even a sub-camera for videoconferencing. Which means that it supports 3G! The E90 is based on the S60 platform and has an integrated GPS and Nokia Maps application. It is expected to ship between July and September 2007 at the initial price of about Rs45,000.
