Left hands over support withdrawal letter to President
Leaders of the four Left parties, led by CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat, have handed over letters of withdrawal of support to the four-year-old UPA government to President Pratibha Patil.
In a separate letter, they have also urged the President to convene a session of the Lok Sabha and direct Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to seek a trust vote.
The four Left parties — CPM, CPI, Forward Bloc and RSP — have 59 members in the Lok Sabha.
“We have met the President and have given her a letter parties withdrawing support to the UPA government," Karat told reporters.
He added that the Left cannot be a party to the government that fulfills commitment to US President Bush and not to the people of India.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party leaders Amar Singh and Ram Gopal Yadav also met President Pratibha Patil and extended support to the UPA government.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar and RJD president Lalu Yadav have also claimed that the UPA has numbers on its side to win a confidence vote in Parliament.
