Green buildings are rated by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), which developed the LEED rating system in 1995. LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standard, is the USGBC’s primary vehicle for promoting sustainable design and construction.

The USGBC developed the LEED Rating System in response to the US market’s demand for a classification of green buildings. Other rating systems like BREEAM and BEPAC (European and Canadian systems) existed at that time and were evaluated, before work on LEED was initiated. Through volunteer committees, the USGBC members developed the LEED standard. The support tools, for example the Reference Guide and Training Workshop, were initially developed with funding from the US department of energy.

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) was founded in 2001 and its mission is: To usher in a green building revolution in India; to become one of the world leaders in green buildings by 2010.

The IGBC has incorporated indigenous norms and conditions for certification under the LEED programme to give an impetus to the green building development in the country.
