The murmurs swirling around India’s former top judge don’t seem to have had any effect on K.G. Balakrishnan. Yet.
Two relatives—his brother and his son-in-law—have both had to step down from offices that they held.
A probe is on against the son-in-law while there is a complaint seeking an inquiry into the assets of Balakrishnan’s wider family.
The former chief justice, now chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, isn’t the first one to have relatives who came under a cloud after demitting that office.
But given the nature of the clamour that’s building, Balakrishnan may soon be forced to throw some welcome light on the situation.
It’s a pity that a person who should have been an exemplar of this country’s ability to reward merit, regardless of background, is in this position.
