Arvind Lalbhai dies at 89
New Delhi: Arvind Narottam Lalbhai, the chairman of The Arvind Mills Ltd, passed away on Friday. The 89-year-old Lalbhai’s 60-year long association with The Arvind Mills saw it grow into a highly specialized Indian textile multinational.
As a son of the third generation of the founder of Lalbhai Group, Sheth Lalbhai Dalpatbhai, he was nationally and internationally known and respected in the business community.
A dynamic entrepreneur, he was also respected for his social and educational services. The Blind Men’s Association, Ahmedabad is a living example of his social concern. He was in short an industrialist with a sense of social responsibility.
Besides being the chairman of the group, he was also the former President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry besides holding directorships in the Arvind Mills Limited (Chairman), Birla VXL Limited, J K Industries Ltd., Arvind Worldwide (M) Inc., USA, Arvind Worldwide Inc., Hong Kong, Arvind Products Limited(Chairman), Lokprakashan Limited, Arvind Overseas (M) Ltd.
In his illustrious career, he had held the office of President of Ahmedabad Millowners’ Association, Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industries and Gujarat State Small Scale Industries Federation. He was also the president of the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) in 1981-82 and represented the industry and business in the country.
The Arvind Mills was set up in 1931. Today, it is the flagship company of Rs20 billion (US$ 500 million) Lalbhai Group.
