New Delhi: The New Delhi Commonwealth Games will give a boost to the tourism sector, increasing the foreign tourist arrivals from a mere 0.5% to 1.5% in 2010.

The boom in tourism will have a huge spin off for the related sectors like aviation, hotels and tour operating service, which together would add over 5,00,000 jobs, industry body Assocham has said.

“During the games, about one million foreign tourists are expected to visit India," the chamber said.

With modernising of Delhi and Mumbai international airports and revamping of other 35 airports, the airline industry would create over 2.5 lakh jobs, an Assocham study said.

The civil aviation industry is estimated to grow by 25% per annum and would touch the level of 35,000 crore by 2010. Airports would handle over 114 million passengers including 45 million foreign travellers, the study said.

The domestic aviation passenger segment is presently growing at 50% and would grow by 70% to 75% by 2010 with induction of 200 large commercial aircraft.

In anticipation of increased demand for rooms, the hotel industry is gearing up for the games. More than 70 hotel projects are in the development stage. These will add 19,000 rooms by 2010.

In the national capital region alone, 27 new hotels are coming up with the addition of about 4,900 rooms in various categories in the next two to three years, the chamber said.

The hotel industry would create an additional employment of 1,50,000 people both for the skilled and unskilled workforce, it said.
