New Delhi: IT services provider NIIT on Tuesday joined hands with the US-based NComputing Inc to offer low-cost computers to schools across the country.

“The alliance will help reduce the cost of computing in schools by 50% and can save 95% electricity, enabling government schools which have a limited budget to impart computer education to the students," NIIT Ltd L Balasubramanian president (School Learning Solutions) told reporters here.

NComputing manufactures a device which can be connected to a central processing unit (CPU). It can then be to connected to more than 30 computers, allowing multiple users to share a single CPU, thus bringing down the cost of infrastructure, installation and maintenance.

NComputing is a perfect solution for schools, e-governance and businesses that presently cannot afford the high-cost of computing hardware.

“We are in talks with several state governments and NGOs for the product which will boost up our sales," NComputing Inc Chief Marketing Officer Raj Shah said.

The product comes in two models - X300 series and L series - and are priced at around $100 (Rs3,900) and $160 (Rs6,240) respectively.
