Quick Edit | Quiet crisis in Pakistan
On Monday, Yousaf Raza Gilani acquired a dubious distinction: he became the first prime minister of Pakistan to be charged with contempt of court . He had to face the wrath of the highest court of land for not pursuing graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
If Gilani is convicted as charged, not only does he stand to lose his job, but he will also be stripped of his membership of parliament. This has led to speculation that in that event, Zardari may pardon him.
Once that happens, all bets will be off.
Given the legacy of imbalances between elected and non-elected institutions in that country, it will not be surprising if the civilian government is dislodged once again.
