The US has been using the Internet to bring about regime change in the Arab world. At least that is what two Chinese military scholars have claimed in a newspaper controlled by the Chinese communist party. “Of late, an Internet tornado has swept across the world...massively impacting and shocking the globe. Behind all this lies the shadow of America,” they claimed.
The Cold War did see the Americans use radio broadcasts to undermine communist regimes, so the possibilty of using the same tactics in a digital world cannot be dismissed. But there is a rich irony in the fact that the Chinese are accusing other countries of waging an Internet war on the rest of the world. There have been several cases over the past few years of Chinese hackers launching digital attacks on the networks of other countries, though there is little to link them to the government. Attack, they say, is the best form of defence.
