At times a bat is better than diplomacy, literally. Zimbabwe’s descent into dictatorship is such a situation. The ruling party, led by Robert Mugabe, left no stone unturned to win the presidential “election”. The international community’s response has been that of a paralysed spectator. The country’s closest partner, South Africa, continues to defend the rogue regime.
The South African cricket board, however, was quick to snap sporting ties. On Wednesday, the English cricket board followed suit. It’s possible that Zimbabwe may be ousted from world cricket when the International Cricket Council meets in Dubai on 2 July.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India kept no links with the South African cricket board as long as apartheid was in place. Why should it keep ties with Zimbabwe when opposition leaders and citizens are being murdered and democracy destroyed? There should be no exception in this case.
